EuropIA Insitute's AI Music Conference
FEDORA's Activities
On 5 November 2024, in celebration of Artifical Intelligence (AI), our Director Edilia Gänz had the opportunity to participate as a panellist at the conference around the topic of “AI Music: What if it increased our creativity?”, organised by the EuropIA Institute, chaired by Marco Landi, at the Palace of the Sardinian Kings in Nice in France.
The panel was moderated by Fred Martin and our Director’s fellow panellists included François Pachet, Jean-Louis Hennequin and Thomas Sforza. This conference explored the potential of AI to enhance creativity while preserving the essential human touch. Participants were able to discover the intersection of AI and the world of music, with a particular focus on the importance of using AI responsibly to protect the core spirit of music.
The event consisted of a series of interactive workshops and performances exploring how AI aids in beat and sample creation, and helps in composing and refining melodies. It also included blind tests where the audience was challenged to differentiate between tracks created by AI and those made by humans.
Our Director, Edilia Ganz, presented two of our previous FEDORA Digital Prize-winning projects, highlighting the transformative use of AI to enhance both the creative process and the audience experience. This presentation emphasised our dedication to pioneering innovative approaches that expand artistic expression and improve access to opera and dance through digital innovation. The winning projects push the boundaries of how we interact with the performing arts, unleashing new forms of artistic creativity and interdisciplinary dialogue.
One of the greatest examples that illustrates the blending of new technologies with interactive performance is the FEDORA Digital Prize 2020 Winner, Laila - Immersive Installation, led by The Finnish National Opera and Ballet. Set in a unique semi-circular space, it invites the audience to engage with Laila, an AI character, exploring the complex relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence. Through this immersive experience, the performance explores how AI can both shape and challenge our understanding of life and emotion.
Another example presented was the FEDORA Digital Prize 2021 Winner, Out of the Ordinary/As an nGnách, led by the Irish National Opera, was the first-ever VR community opera that dived into the creativity and life experiences of diverse Irish communities with limited exposure to opera, by using innovative technology to bring their stories to life in a new and impactful way.
Also the last FEDORA Digital Prize 2023 Winner, The Sound Voice Project led by Britten Pears Arts, offers a groundbreaking immersive digital opera that explores the profound connection between voice and identity in interactive, adaptable spaces. This innovative performance celebrates the intrinsic value of the human voice, bringing together a diverse collaboration of experts in voice synthesis, interactive sound design, video production, augmented reality, motion capture, biomedical research, soft robotics, and individuals with lived experiences of voice loss. Through this fusion of technology and human experience, the project invites audiences to reflect on the power and vulnerability of the voice in shaping who we are.
Contributing to such an impactful forward-thinking conference provided a valuable opportunity to envision the advancements transforming the music sector through AI. It also allowed us to explore how we can adapt to the evolving challenges and trends shaping the industry, ensuring a harmonious balance between art and technology.
